recently I made an unusual experience by an occasional job. for a japaneese tv-production I had to make a few sketches of Kandinskys paintings in the Kandinsky hall in Lenbachhaus in Munic, then to talk about his concept of painting and its influence on my own works.
I would have never come up with the idea of sketching a Kandinsky on my own. actually his poetry is closer to me than his paintings and his art theory. now following the request i made several transfers of the painting "Improvisation 26 - rudern (rowing)" on a sheet of paper with charcoal.
it was unexpectedly complicated. during the process i felt that it was not about what kind if a story the black lines of the rows and the red curve of the boat can tell but about their exact place and form in the bounded space of the canvas that mattered.
Kandinsky, Improvisation 26 (rudern)
to tell the truth it was a good training. maybe i'll start regularly sketching Kandinsky for me.
